Timo Kahlen
(* born 1966), lives and works in Berlin, Germany
Sound sculptor and media artist Timo Kahlen has been creating eye- and earcatching, temporary media sculptures and sound works for more than 25 years. Presenting challenges to our imagination and perception, Kahlen has chosen to work with the ephemeral: with wind and steam, with light and shade, with sound, noise and vibration. His work has received nominations for various renowned scholarships and residencies, for the German national “Sound Art Prize“ (2006), for the “Kahnweiler Prize for Sculpture“ (2001) and for the “Prize for Young European Photographers“ (1989), as well as critical recognition at more than 140 exhibitions of contemporary media art since the mid-1980s : including invitations to „Sound Art: Sound as a Medium of Art“ (ZKM | Karlsruhe 2012-2013), “Tonspur_expanded: The Loudspeaker“ (Vienna 2010), “Manifesta 7: Scenarios“ (Italy 2008), “Wireless Experience“ (ISEA, Helsinki 2004), “Zeitskulptur: Volumen
als Ereignis“ (Linz 1997) and his solo exhibition “Timo Kahlen: Works with Wind“, inaugurating the Kunst-Werke Berlin in former East Berlin‘s Auguststraße in 1991. For the past 25 years and more, Timo Kahlen’s truly experimental work has been both the sensual and conceptual expression of the productive and creative quality of unintentional mistakes, acoustic and systemic glitches and noise. The proposed work was created with the disruption and the glitch themes in mind.

“Räuspern”, Sound sculpture – Microphone stand, loudspeaker and sound, 2014
A very simple, minimalistic sound sculpture: the sound of the speaker (the artist) clearing his throat, raising his voice, trying to catch attention and testing the ‘microphone’, which is in fact a small loudspeaker, replacing the original microphone on a microphone stand. A (yet) inarticulate voice, testing its presence – a disruptive ‘testing ground’ in the middle of the room, in front of the audience.
